WORKING WITH KONTRON OPEN MODULAR SOLUTIONS

Don’t get locked in with ‘one-vendor-fits-all’ ATCA platform providers.
Why, you ask? Because no one ATCA vendor can do it all. That is why you demand an ATCA platform provider that is open to pre-validate, pre-test and, of course, provide the exceptional flexibility to integrate even third-party hardware and software.

At Kontron, we hear you loud and clear. We draw from an expanding portfolio of GbE and 10GbE ATCA platform elements, AMC processor, storage and I/O modules, plus extensive integration services of third-party hardware along with carrier-grade OS and HA middleware.

Talk today with a Kontron system architect to help you from start to finish, and experience firsthand why seeing your application go to market quickly is important to us. Now that’s flexible.

Market Drivers – IPTV

New revenue streams:
One of the most active areas for converged network applications is video content delivery for new IPTV services, and opens a new market for the traditional service provider (SP). Recent reports demonstrate that the number of households using IPTV worldwide will increase to more than 80 million in 2011, from just 6 million since the end from 2006.

This will be double in 2007 in the European market according to the media research company Screen Digest. With such an increase in demand from new subscribers, the SP’s network infrastructure needs to be highly flexible and scalable.

Kontron & Industry Alliances

The key to a truly successful adoption of today’s open modular, open standard hardware based on AdvancedTCA, AdvancedMC, and MicroTCA is the full industry-wide commitment to achieving interoperability among each vendor’s platform elements.

In response, Kontron has joined and played an active role within two new organizations dedicated to achieving industry interoperability and ensuring that carrier-grade requirements are met in collaboration with key Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs).

One such group is The Communications Platforms Trade Association (CP-TA) which has established several working groups to address COTS interoperability. The CP-TA has grown to 30 members and has also joined the Mountain View Alliance, an umbrella organization dedicated to accelerate the adoption of platforms and building blocks based on the specifications of member organizations.

The key system interoperability issues are manageability, data transport, and thermal and physical designs. Therefore, CP-TA created task forces under the Technical Work Group (TWG) to focus on these challenges. The TWG is currently developing the first Interoperability Compliance Document (ICD) for AdvancedTCA, while the Compliance Working Group (CWG) is developing a corresponding Test Procedure Manual (TPM) to define procedures for the ICD.

To allow for full certification of interoperable building blocks, CP-TA has also created a Certification Task Force to drive the RFP process for a third party certification laboratory.

At ITU Telecom World 2006, CP-TA held the first interoperability demonstration with building blocks from member companies. In November 2006, CP-TA held its first interoperability workshop in parallel with the PICMG (PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group) AdvancedTCA Interoperability Workshop, performing thermal, management, and data transport testing. CP-TA has signed a liaison agreement with PICMG to exchange information and promote open telecom specifications.

Kontron has also become an active member of the SCOPE Alliance, which represents major TEMs and hardware suppliers of ATCA and otherrelated technologies. The objective of SCOPE is to accelerate and to promote the deployment of open carrier-grade based platforms for telecommunication services. Rather than defining its own specifications and standards, the SCOPE Alliance defines application profiles, or, best practices for applying ATCA, AMC and mTCA technology for telecommunication solutions.

SCOPE intends to define guidelines and the right options for applications in telecommunication systems. The resulting profiles are to be published and submitted to PICMG as input for standardization. SCOPE is organized in technical and marketing working groups. The technical working groups cover Hardware (ATCA, AMC, mTCA), Software (Carrier Grade Operating Systems, Middleware, and a new group on Virtualization).

From Kontron’s perspective, the benefit of SCOPE is its comprehensive view – rather than being focused on hardware, it intends to cover the complete picture including software, equipment practice and future developments. Kontron actively contributes to the hardware group (ATCA, AMCs and mTCA), as well as the new Virtualization group.
Kontron enables TEMs and NEPs to accelerate the delivery of end-to-end IMS, wireless, broadband, Triple Play network infrastructure equipment and service provider clients.
Kontron open modular platforms are integrated, validated and tested to accelerate your new application designs for faster market deployment.
